Less Talk, More Action: Part 2[017]

My 2016 motto was “less talk, more action”. As simple as it sounds, I was only relatively successful with it as far as joining my sorority, my summer working next to the beach, and booking a flight to Spain. 2017 is the year where I kick it up a notch.

I couldn’t go as far into the future as the lovely Paxton Mittleman did, my professional mentor who inspired me to write this up, but this list leaves me full of excitement for the coming year.

My 2017 Goals

The Measurable (in no particular order)

  1.  Write everyday: It’ll help me in the long run, even if it’s just a quick jot.
  2. Get my nose pierced: Oddly enough my mom convinced me.dsc_1251
  3. Join a committee on my sorority: Saying “get more involved” was too vague.
  4. Get a great job in Delaware if I don’t get an internship: Gotta be realistic.
  5. Go to the beach once a month this summer: I miss it.
  6. Get a tattoo: Something dainty.
  7. Perfect the process of the french press: The Keurig isn’t cutting it, no matter how convenient.
  8. Apply for CEAStudyAbroad: Spring 2018 here I come.
  9. Get 500 followers on penneformythoughts: And enjoy the journey.screen-shot-2016-12-31-at-3-24-12-pm
  10. Try a new recipe once every 2 weeks a month: Can’t get too ambitious there, but different variations of the same thing don’t count.
  11. Visit a new [American] town or city: Road trip?
  12. Have a 30-photo nikon portfolio: Or have 30, high-quality photos I am completely and utterly proud of. Food photos don’t count.
  13. Parasail (again): I’d give zip lining a shot too.
  14. Learn [at least] one song on my guitar: I’m thinking James Arthur, Lauryn Hill, or the Lumineers-if not all three.
  15. Read 3 books on my own time: I’m not going to share how many books I didn’t read this year.

The Vague (to remind me how endless the possibilities of the future are)

  • Laugh until I cry: As much as possible
  • Stay Healthy: mentally and physically
  • Think More: Ask more questions and seek more answers
  • Stay positive: Constantly keeping that glass half full
  • Self love: Enough said

I am not making any promises to myself with this blog in particular because I can only hope my goals will fuel my passions and ideas.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Studying: Coffee House Composure

It can be hard to focus in college. So many people and activities and food. It’s important to find a place to really be able to focus, whether it be in the library or dorm. After my first semester in college, I know I prefer studying in coffee shops or cafés. Some people may not have found their favorite place personally, but even during my winter session I get the best work done when I leave my house and venture to a new setting. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it is definitely my cup of coffee.

Why Coffee Houses?

  • But First, Coffee: Coffee is both a cultural phenomenon and basically an essential item to function. Cafés/coffee houses have an endless supply of it (shocker, right?!), as well as varieties of tea, delicious pastries, or even the occasional healthy foods. Although Starbucks is great, more unique places tend to have different and better things to offer.
  • The People: Small coffee houses are usually stocked with original characters and quality service. Both the customers and employees are usually conversational and pleasant to interact with!
  • Noisy, but not annoying: Working in complete silence is just a call for distractions for me as little things tick or tock. Too much noise is a distraction in it of itself. I find the low buzz of conversations and steamers the perfect complements for a study session.
  • Energy: Not to get too hippie-hippie here, but my past three reasons all add to the feelings of a coffee house or café. I find them so cozy, comfortable, and straight-up motivating. Most other people there are also studying, and everyone is hyped up on coffee and cream.
  • Even science supports the coffee-shop-studying-movement!
  • Who does’t want to feel like the cast of Friends?

Make the Best of it:

  • Know Your Budget: Know going in that you are going to only buy one cup and a muffin so that you do not keep ordering coffee as you spend more time there and accidentally drop $20 on coffee in one day.
  • Try New Things: Those giant menus are created for a reason. Don’t order the same thing every time you go and it will help bring more excitement to what you are studying!
  • Get to Know the Staff: I have yet to master this, but having the people know your name and/or order could really make your stressful study days a little bit better.
  • Don’t go every single day because the day you skip will be filled with a caffein withdrawal headache.
  • For anyone in Newark, Delaware: Brew HaHa and Brewed Awakenings are the best things to ever happen on Main Street.

You’ve got nothing to loose, except maybe some money.

Please join me in my coffee house obsession and check out your local places, especially if you are a student or if only just to support a small business at the end of the day!

A rose by any other name would small as sweet… or something like that, right? Whatever floats your boat my way.

Hello one and all! Nice to have you here.

A lot of things are changing in my life right now, but here are a few things that will never change:  I love to bake. Music is a big part of my life. I have pretty curly hair.

I’ll always be a Chicago Suburb-ean at heart, but I’m moving to Newark, Delaware this summer (28 days!!) to attend the University of Delaware. How I ended up there is a story of it’s own. What I’m hoping to do with my life is also a story. Typical Communications major.

My heart has grown fonder for writing as I have not actually written a non-school assignment in awhile. I’m gonna try to kick this blog off right by writing about anything and everything that I want to! I hope that my blog will grow and change with me as I go through college.

You’ll get to know me in the coming weeks as I hope to get to know any of my readers, if I ever have any!

Please enjoy this photo of some delicious donuts and have a great day
